Ka ʻAha Hula i Waimea: A Kahea to Halau Hula
‘Ano’ai and Welina! Waimea Valley is excited to invite Kumu, halau and hula practitioners to bring hula to Waimea Valley. Many halau and kumu, such as John Ka’imikaua and Pi’ilani Lua, once taught their haumana and participated in the sacred rites of Makahiki here. At one time, Waimea Valley was home to thousands of Hawaiians who lived, farmed, worked, and played.
In this ongoing program, Waimea Valley welcomes all to come and connect back to Waimea Valley through oli, kahiko, and ʻauana. Waimea hopes to host Halau several times monthly to bring their cultural practice to the valley. This is an opportunity to deeply share their manaʻo, hula, and lineage with all who visit.
Waimea respects each halau and their personal practices, protocols, and rites and requires only that the presentations brought to the Valley be true to the Hawaiian art of hula, as taught by their Kumu and as perpetuated by their haumana. The Halau participating will be part of the valley's experience that day; guests are invited to watch and experience the beauty of hula in this natural setting.
Honorariums are available for selected participating halau. If you are interested in this program as a halau Kumu, haumana, or hula instructor, please complete the interest form.
We are honored to be able to help bring meaningful hula engagement back to Waimea Valley.
